Activities and services
Besides providing a venue for people to meet and socialise, the World House also organises activities for personal development and social integration. These include workshops about access to employment and healthcare, and even about medical issues such as Covid-19. They also include creative activities such as learning to sew, under the instruction of Ilmira.
Dutch lessons
We offer two different levels of free Dutch classes for undocumented people. These take place every Monday at 13:30. We have two teachers, each of whom teaches a separate group: one for beginners and one for more advanced Dutch learners. These classes take place at the Wereldhuis location, Nieuwe Herengracht 18.
Free eye-care consultations
Accessing eye care can be especially challenging as an undocumented person. That’s why we work Stichting Zienderogen and an optician who offers a free consultation every 1-2 months at the Wereldhuis for undocumented people. At this consultation, you can have your vision tested, be checked for other ophthalmologic issues (including a referral for further tests or healthcare if needed), and receive free glasses.
Please note: Registration is required in advance. See below for how to register. Once you contact us to register, you will be placed on the waiting list and we will contact you with the appointment details when these are available.
Ways to register:
Come by the Wereldhuis in person and ask a member of staff, or
Send us an sms or WhatsApp message at 0630108478, or
Call us at the Wereldhuis general information number (0622821472) during our opening hours (Monday-Friday, 10:00-15:30)
Volunteer work
Undocumented visitors can also participate in volunteer work at the Wereldhuis. Our catering staff, hosts and hostesses, housemasters, cleaners, and gardeners are all volunteers! If you’re undocumented and interested in volunteering, just speak with one of our team members.
